The excavated chime bells are a complete grand musical instruments consisting of a ceremonial set of 65 bronze bells, covering from five and a half octaves to twelve semitones of the chromatic scale. With excellent casting technique and good musical performance, they have changed the history of music in the world; and they have been hailed as “rare treasures” by experts and scholars at home and abroad. What’s more, every bell can produce two tones which are at the interval of Whole-tones Third. Covering from five and a half octaves to twelve semitones of the chromatic scale, the bells are the earliest musical instrument with twelve semitones that have been found in the world. It is still a wonder that the each bell of the Bells can produce two accurate tones. It is found through acoustics test that such system of two tones is due to it’s the form of combination of bells. While the front side of a bell is knocked, the amplitude of vibration the back side is zero; and while the back side is knocked, the amplitude of the front side is zero. In this way, two tones can exist in one body without disturbance to each other. Up to now, the Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng have been the set of bells with the largest and most complete melody. It looks grand and majestic, weighing more than 2,500 kilos. Together with other components such as cross girders and the pillars, its total weight is more than 5 tonnes. The Chime Bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng is the unique masterpiece in the world music history.
